The two big time free agent signings by the Jaguars last offseason are no more as the Jaguars have released WR Jerry Porter and CB Drayton Florence.
Both players severly underperformed, whether it be injury on the part of Porter or lack of ability to adapt to the Jaguars defensive scheme by Florence. But the real reason these two players were cut from the team was due to their negative effect on the Jaguars’ team chemistry. Jaguars veterans resented their large contracts based on relatively small bodies of work and the team never got over that.
It is refreshing to see that the new GM Gene Smith is willing to take such a bold move and it proves his dedication to rebuidling the team through the draft. Now the only problem is that we have even more holes to fill than before. At this point here is what we need:
-a LT as Khalif Barnes will not be resigned
-a CB to replace Drayton Florence
-possibly a FS to replace Gerald Sensabaugh if he is not resigned
-possibly another LB because we aren’t bringing back Mike Peterson (we have 3 solid starters in Daryl Smith, Clint Ingram and Justin Durant but I’m not sure if Brian Iwuh and Thomas Williams are good enough back ups)
-a young RB who can take the some reps for Maurice Jones-Drew (because even if Fred Taylor is back he won’t be here much longer)
-a DT to complement John Henderson (Rob Meier just couldn’t get the job done last year)
-a collection of new WRs (with Porter gone and Reggie Williams leaving through free agency we will be left with only Matt Jones, Dennis Northcutt, Mike Walker and Troy Williamson)
Oh and we only have 6 picks in this years draft. Good luck!
