With the Pro Bowl coming to a conclusion, the off season is upon us. Though we must all brace ourselves for endless speculations, draft spectulation and trade rumors until August, there is something that the off season brings. Today, the Jaguars are undefeated. How long will that last? With the new addition of Mel Tucker at defensive coordinator, some don’t think that title will last for long.
Many people, including one of our own writers here, doubt the hire of Mel Tucker. He came from the Browns who had one of the worst defenses in the league. I still haven’t been convinced myself that he was hired so that Del Rio could have control of the defense. However, Tucker faced his doubters.
“You earn the opportunities you get in this business,” Tucker said at lunchtime, taking off his glasses to rub from his eyes the last remnants of film study from the night before that lasted past 1 a.m. “Nobody is trying to do anybody any favors. So I feel confident in what I can do as a coach. I just know when people choose to work with me, it tells me they have confidence in me to get the job done. So [none of the criticism] factors into my thinking.”
It is still hard for Jaguars fans to swallow this pill. How are the Jaguars supposed to come back to power with a weak defensive coordinator? There were a lot of things that were disappointing last season but the defense came at the top of the list. There is, after all, only so many points your offense should be expected to play.
But today the Jaguars are undefeated. Today the entire NFL is equal. Today is for hope. And I sure do hope that Tucker isn’t a lame duck hire.
