Jack Del Rio Will Be His Own Defensive Coordinator In 2009

There was a few things going on over the last week with the Jaguars’ defensive coaching staff.  The staff has been at the Senior Bowl coaching the South team this week, most noticeably without defensive backs coach Donnie Henderson.  Last week, as reported here, the Jaguars interviewed Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker for what we thought was the defensive coordinator position.  Now it is apparent that Mel Tucker will take over as defensive backs coach and Jack Del Rio will be his own defensive coordinator.  I have heard of head coaches being their own offensive coordinator but outside of Wade Phillips taking over in the middle of last season, I have not heard of a head coach handling defensive coordinator responsibilites.

This move confirms my suspicions that Jack Del Rio has to produce this season or he is out.  And he is going to have to do it without any major coaching or possibly player hires.  As a Jaguar fan I hope Del Rio succedes but I can’t help but dream about having one of the many coaches that will be available at the end of next season.  Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, John Gruden, Mike Holmgren, Brian Billick….

Thanks to Cole Pepper for breaking the story on his blog.

well, it worked well for phillups, but it was completely out of nessessity. i would look at delrio’s situation and say hey if the ship is going to sail, he might as well have the wheel in his hands, and if it sinks, again, at least he’s in control of his own destiny
