The Changing Of Gaurds

Posted by: Jeanne

The news coming out of the Jaguars has been somewhat sobering this week. Who would expect anything else after a two week losing streak to the AFC North?

Jack Del Rio met with his leadership council on Wednesday as player’s locker assignments got switched around. What was this meeting about?

“That’s between us players and coach Del Rio,” center Brad Meester said when asked what was said in the meeting between Del Rio and the team’s leadership council. “I’m going to leave it at that.”

Del Rio stated that he moved the lockers around to help with team chemistry. What makes this year’s chemistry an issue compared to last year? Well, that is the question that seemingly doesn’t have an answer.

Overall, the Jaguars players are more tight lipped than Sarah Palin, giving little information to what is going on with the team. However, David Garrard does point out that they lost two games and that doesn’t make for a happy locker room.

“Any team that is losing is going to have a happiness problem,” Garrard said. “It’s all about losing, and losing is never fun.”

Del Rio’s actions are, in a sense, speaking louder than words. Linebacker Mike Peterson was asked to leave practice on Wednesday. The Florida Times Union describes the situation:

From talking to some people around the building, I hear that Del Rio was basically tearing into his team - laying down the law, so to speak - on Wednesday and he singled out a few of the players. Well, one of the first people he supposedly singled out was Peterson (about his celebration after a particular play), who wasn’t happy about the perceived slight and spoke his mind.

Del Rio immediately asked Peterson to leave.

The linebacker complied.

Del Rio is shaking off the label “player’s coach” here. He also banned all electronics, turned off the TV in the locker room and forbid the players from their daily game of dominos. I don’t know what is more shocking there. The fact the Del Rio looks like he has a case of the Mad Dad syndrome or that the Jaguars players play a daily game of dominos. That whole situation sounds like the worst summer camp experience a kid could have. It isn’t exactly what you picture the NFL being like.

On a lighter note, apparently Josh Scobee is now participating in MLB
