Today is the first day of training camp and to the shock of most fans, Matt Jones is expected to be there. Derrick Harvey, this year’s first round draft pick, is the only person who is not going to be there.
Yesterday, Matt Jones held a brief press conference to address his arrest.
“I’ve talked to Wayne (Weaver). I put myself in a situation that isn’t good and I’m embarrassed for Wayne and Mrs. Weaver and Jack Del Rio and even the fans of Jacksonville.”
He also assured the public that he does not have a drug problem. There’s not much to worry about there, though. The NFL will find out if he is lying. People with drug charges get checked for drugs in the system pretty regularly.
Fred Taylor had this to say:
“I spoke with Matt maybe three days ago,” Jaguars running back Fred Taylor said. “He’s a man. Like all of us, we’re all human. I’m pretty sure a few of you guys voted for George Bush. In that breath, a few of you guys are probably [ticked] off about gas prices, too. We all make mistakes is what I’m trying to say. The thing is you can’t do it twice.
“That’s my teammate, and I’m going to support him,” Taylor added. “He feels bad about what happened. But it’s time to focus on football. That’s done with, it’s in the past. It’s going to be handled by the law, one, by [NFL commissioner] Mr. [Roger] Goodell, two, and the organization being three.”
Have I mentioned lately that I absolutely adore Fred Taylor?
I am not the biggest fan of Matt Jones. It is probably the same way Viking fans feel about Troy Williamson. However, maybe getting knocked down (really, truly knocked down) will actually help Matt Jones. I find myself saying something like this at the start of every season. It is that hope, the optimism that fills a football fan after the drought of the off season. Maybe this year things will be different.
Maybe this year things will be different.
